Best place to visit in corbett and things to do
Located in Nainital and Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, established in 1936 to protect the endangeredBengal tiger, Jim Corbett National Park is the oldest national park in India and was named after Jim Corbett, a well known hunter and naturalist.
The park is an ecotourism destination which is home for 488 different species of plants and a diverse variety of fauna.
The forest mainly consists of Peepal, Sal & Mango trees and occupies approximately 73% of the park space with 10% of the grassland area. As per the records, 33 species of reptiles, seven species of amphibians, seven species of fish, 36 species of dragonflies and more than 586 species of resident and migratory birds have been categorised, including the crested serpent eagle, blossom-headed parakeet and the red jungle fowl — ancestor of all domestic fowl.
Due to the abundance of foliage - camouflage - in the reserve, the Bengal tiger, although plentiful, are not easily spotted.
Leopards are found in hilly areas but may also venture into the low land jungles. Other mammals include barking deer, sambar deer, hog deer and chital, sloth and Himalayan black bears, Indian grey mongoose, otters, yellow-throated martens, Himalayan goral, Indian pangolins, and langur and rhesus macaques. Owls and nightjars can be heard during the night. In the summer, Indian elephants can be seen in herds of several hundred.
Corbett welcomes the visitors all year long with its temperate weather, however during the winter season i.e. between November and February; it is at its best. As all the zones are open and you can spot the most animals. During the winter, the temperature may vary from 5 °C (41 °F) to 30 °C (86 °F) with some mornings being foggy.
Summer temperatures normally do not rise above 40 °C (104 °F). Rainfall ranges from light during the winter to heavy during the monsoonal summer.
For tourists and wildlife lovers this place has been a haunt. Tourism activity is only allowed in selected areas of Corbett Tiger Reserve so that people get an opportunity to see its landscape and wildlife.
